will conclude at the summit of Lipton’s Seat, where you’ll be rewarded with an
incredible view. A picnic with a mountain view will end this scenic adventure.
Then, head to Ella for a free afternoon to explore this
beautiful area. You can choose from the following suggestions to customize your
program:
Little Adam’s Peak
A relatively easy hike through tea plantations, Little Adam’s Peak offers
stunning views over the Ella valley. During certain times of the year, you
might even spot the Indian Ocean. The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours from Ella
or 30 minutes round-trip from the trailhead.
Dowa Temple
This small cave temple, similar in some ways to Dambulla, is believed to have
been built by King Walagamba during his exile from Anuradhapura. The temple is
renowned for its unfinished, 12-meter tall Buddha statue carved directly into
the granite rock. In the main cave, there is a small stupa hiding an 11 km long
tunnel that supposedly leads to Ella. Legend has it that King Walagamba
disappeared suddenly through this tunnel, halting the Buddha statue’s carving
work.
Nine Arch Bridge
The famous Nine Arch Bridge, located between Ella and Demodara railway
stations, is one of the marvels of early 20th-century engineering. Over 100
years old, it is built with stone blocks and cement, without any reinforcement
from iron or concrete, and has nine large arches allowing trains to pass
between two mountains. Construction began under the British but was delayed by
World War I, with steel intended for the project being redirected for war
efforts. The bridge was completed without a single piece of steel.
Zip Line
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, try the zip line, which lets you glide
550 meters down the Ella valley, offering a 360-degree view of the stunning
landscapes below. The line reaches speeds of up to 80 km/h and is 80 meters
above the ground, with the descent lasting only a few seconds. This activity is
family-friendly (20 USD per person).

Day 9: Journey by Local Train to Kandy
Haputale – Nanu Oya – (By Train)
Nanu Oya – Kandy 100 km – 2hr 30mins

to a local train for a scenic ride to Nanu Oya. During the journey, enjoy
breathtaking views of the surrounding tea plantations and lush landscapes. Upon
arrival at Nanu Oya station, your driver will be waiting for you.
Please note that train tickets are available only 30 days
prior to departure, and we cannot guarantee seat reservations through travel
agencies, meaning you may have to travel standing. Your luggage will be
transported separately by your driver.
After the train ride, you’ll continue your journey to Kandy.
At an altitude of 500 meters, Kandy enjoys a cooler climate. Once the capital
of the last Sinhalese kingdom, Kandy resisted Portuguese and Dutch occupation
for three centuries before falling to the British in 1815.
In the evening, around 6:00 PM, visit the famous Temple of
the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa), where thousands of pilgrims arrive daily with
offerings of lotus flowers and frangipani. Adjacent to the temple is the palace
of the last King of Ceylon. The ancient city of Kandy is a UNESCO World
Heritage site.
Tip: If you are visiting during the right dates,
consider attending the Kandy Perahera, one of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious
religious processions. For about ten days, the streets of Kandy become the
stage for a grand procession of elephants, dancers, and drummers, all paying
homage to the sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha. We can arrange reserved seats for a
closer view (approximately 60 USD per ticket), or you can try to find tickets
on-site, though availability may be limited.
